"The Fertility Crisis is the Defining Challenge of Our Time" — Elon Musk

Elon Musk has repeatedly flagged declining birth rates as one of humanity's most critical threats, pointing to falling fertility rates across developed nations — and increasingly, in India's urban centres. With India's Total Fertility Rate dropping to 2.0, experts are watching closely.

The BabySutra's Take

"The conversation around fertility is finally entering the mainstream — and that's important. But the solution isn't just medical. Lifestyle, nutrition, stress, and environmental toxins are all quietly affecting our reproductive health. Awareness is the first step toward change."

After 10 Daughters, Haryana Couple Welcome a Son — Father Denies Patriarchy Claims

A 37-year-old woman in Haryana's Jind district gave birth to her 11th child — a son — after 10 daughters, in what doctors described as a high-risk delivery. The couple, married 19 years, were discharged within 24 hours. The father, Sanjay, went viral when a video showed him struggling to recall all his daughters' names. He denied accusations of patriarchal bias, saying girls are achieving great things and making the country proud. The story has reignited debate around Haryana's skewed sex ratio — 923 females per 1,000 males in 2025 — and the deep-rooted social pressure for a male child that persists despite decades of awareness campaigns.

The BabySutra's Take

"This story is not about one family — it's about a belief system that puts a woman's body through 11 pregnancies in pursuit of a gender. The health cost, the emotional cost, the financial cost — all invisible in the headline. At The BabySutra, we work with couples to separate the desire for a child from the pressure around its gender. A healthy pregnancy, a healthy child — that is the only goal that matters."

Scientists Create Functional Human Eggs From Skin Cells — A World First

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) have achieved what was once considered impossible — turning ordinary human skin cells into functional egg cells capable of producing early embryos. Published in Nature Communications, the breakthrough uses a new technique called "mitomeiosis" — a combination of mitosis and meiosis, the two known forms of cell division. The process transplants a skin cell nucleus into a donor egg, which then sheds half its chromosomes before being fertilised via IVF. Of 82 eggs produced, 9% reached the blastocyst stage. Researchers estimate at least a decade of further work before any clinical use — but call it a milestone for millions facing infertility due to age, cancer treatment, or absence of viable eggs.

The BabySutra's Take

"Science is moving fast — and this is genuinely remarkable. But while researchers work toward tomorrow's solutions, millions of couples today don't have a decade to wait. The body's natural capacity to conceive — when properly nourished, balanced, and supported — remains the most accessible path available right now. We exist for that space."

India's Fertility Rate Falls to 1.9 — Below Replacement Level for the First Time in History

India's Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has dropped to 1.9 children per woman — below the 2.1 replacement threshold needed to keep the population stable. According to the Sample Registration System report, this marks a historic first. States like Delhi (1.2), Tamil Nadu (1.3), and Maharashtra (1.4) now have fertility rates comparable to Nordic nations. Only six states — Bihar, UP, MP, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh — remain above replacement level. Experts point to rising female education, increased cost of raising children, delayed marriages, and lifestyle changes as key drivers.

The BabySutra's Take

"India has gone from 5.2 children per woman in 1971 to 1.9 today — in just two generations. While this reflects real social progress, it also signals that millions of couples who do want children are finding it harder than expected. The conversation we need isn't just about population — it's about reproductive health, awareness, and giving couples the right support at the right time."

9 Million Girls Missing: Female Feticide & Infanticide Remain a Silent Crisis in India

Pew Research data based on Indian government records reveals that at least 9 million female fetuses were aborted between 2000 and 2019 — a figure that represents one of the largest cases of gender-selective elimination in human history. India's Sex Ratio at Birth stands at 110 males per 100 females — far above the natural global average of 101. The problem is most acute in northern states like Haryana and Punjab, where skewed ratios have created a "bride crisis" — with men travelling thousands of kilometres to find wives. Despite the PCPNDT Act and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaigns, the practice persists, now increasingly enabled by IVF-PGD and sperm-sorting technologies.

The BabySutra's Take

"Behind every statistic is a choice made under pressure — social, financial, cultural. At The BabySutra, we believe that conscious conception means welcoming life without conditions. The gender of a child is biology, not destiny. Our work begins with helping couples release the pressure so the body can do what it naturally knows how to do."
